WORD TO LIVE BY:
Thoughts – something that we can control, something that affects and influences our attitude, habits, beliefs, identity and more.

Everything in your life right now once started as just a thought, a desired, and inspired moment.

They say that we have as much as, or more, than 60,000 thoughts each day.

We have the power to control, change and improve our thoughts each day.

Thinking about what you want, think about your goals, think about action steps that you can take now towards that.

This also goes for feelings! – if you want to feel relaxed (not stressed), feel inspired (not frustrated), feel happy (not down) then spend time each day thinking about that simple goal, and what you can do to get there. Avoid thinking about the negative feelings. What you focus on expands.

The simple act of thinking about goals, writing it down, repeating it, focusing on it will help.

We can prime ourselves – studies show that if you look at and focus on certain things, later on you’ll ‘see more’ of that stuff and typically you’ll act with that stuff in mind.

So prime yourself the Right way. (We prime ourselves each day no matter what with the news, social media, etc. – often in a bad way with gloomy/negative news, etc. Take control)

In our daily lives we can’t control much; other people, weather, the economy, the news, etc. – but we CAN control our thoughts – and our thoughts influence our day, our beliefs, our habits, our identity.

Frey Freyday was actually born out of something I created called “Words To Live By” (WTLB). Going forward, I will now not only share the quotes, as you may be used to receiving, but also a related (WTLB). In 1999, when we had our first daughter, I was contemplating how I would raise my new beautiful child, and I was thinking about how I can best educate her and my other children about values, morals, and other key thoughts about life. School offers education. Religion offers some values and morals. Parents offer most of it, sometimes intentionally, sometimes accidentally.

So I created a (WTLB) book, like a dictionary, which lists things like honesty, love, persistence, etc. with a definition that I created, with my wife’s input. I then turned it into a workbook with one word per page and space below for notes. For years we would discuss with my two daughters and they would draw pictures and make notes in the blank space. I may share some of those images with you. As they got older, they were less inclined to draw and more open to quotes and references from adults, hence where Frey Freyday came from….

While watching a documentary on Warren Buffett, I heard Warren Buffett’s son, Howard, say something that reminded of a piece of advice that I believe is universal and applicable to all of us at any age.

I have tried to offer this advice to my daughters, to a friend, and frankly I try to remind myself at least once a year….

Listen, no matter what weaknesses you may think you have, you have some talents, some strengths, some unique ‘things’ that you can contribute to others and ‘stuff’ with which you can build a nice life. You may be bright, talented, you may have a great personality, people like to be with you, you mayhave a sense of humor, you probably are a hard worker, and you have a huge potential- probably more than you realize. In many ways, we all easily forget that the future is open wide.

As I’ve tried to explain to my daughters, as I try to remind myself; make sure about one thing; Define the life that you want. Create a vision for YOUR life. Only you can find that. You’ll get feedback, good and bad, from friends, family, society, even parent. Some of those people only know their own world. Some are fearful and protective of you. Some of us may not even understand your vision. But ultimately it is you who will live your life and you are the one who will live with the consequences, good or bad. (by the way, it is never too late to create a vision for your life!)

Whether you live by someone else’s rules and expectations, or whether you create your own vision and follow your own path, someday you’ll be older and look back upon your life. At that point you will either be very satisfied with your life or partially or completely dissatisfied. I’m not super old but when I look back, there are choices that I made because I worried what other people thought – and I’m not totally satisfied with those things. There are other choices where I am satisfied and I feel at peace. A large number of people in the world look back on their lives with regret because they did (or didn’t) do something because of someone’s opinion/ideas/whatever.

Also, another great piece of advice; In baseball, perfection is referred to as batting 1000. I don’t expect anyone to, or want you to try to bat 1000. No one should expect to be perfect – in fact I hope that more of us do fail a little, and what I mean by that I hope that more of us are willing to take chances! Take sensible risks! You can’t satisfy everyone, so that’s futile. Take risks and don’t be afraid to fail and you will learn and grow in your failures more than most of your successes. Be at peace with making a mistake, be at peace with taking a risk, be at peace with others disagreeing with you and let go of the concern of others opinions. I try to remember that each day.

If you think about what humans can do and be, if we’re bold and focuses, it is exciting.

Self-Aware – to be aware of oneself, not in a narcissistic way but in an introspective manner so that we can recognize things, separate us and the environment, etc. To be self-aware, we’re more in the moment, more focused, more intentional.

I think we all know some people that are not self-aware about a few things. We all are that person sometimes.

I remember that I went to a networking event and I decided the day before that I really wanted to focus on being outgoing. On the day of the event, I forgot about that and I remember catching myself half-way through the event, looking at two people who were in the corner not talking to anyone. I was judging them for being introverted, whatever. Then I realized that I really hadn’t talked to anyone either! I was just as bad or worse than they were and didn’t realize it until that moment. I was in my head thinking about others, judging, and not networking. I was not self-aware.

We all do things like this often.

Being self-aware helps us ‘live in the moment’ more. If we’re in our heads, if we’re worried about yesterday, tomorrow, or some possible event that might happen, we’re not seeing life right before us. We’re not paying attention to all sorts of things, including how we are acting and reacting to things around us. We’re missing things, too.

Think about every good memory that you have. You were present and self-aware in that moment. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t have that memory. Are you missing the chance for a memory right now?

First, all great religions talk about compassion. The more we mature individually and/or as a species, the more compassionate we become.

There is another definition out there that states “Compassion motivates people to go out of their way to help physical, spiritual, or emotional hurts or pains of another. Compassion is often regarded as having an emotional aspect to it, though when based on cerebral notions such as fairness, justice and interdependence, it may be considered rational in nature and its application understood as an activity based on sound judgment.” This is true. Even though compassion and the act of it often makes us feel better and involved emotion, the benefits can truly be rational and pragmatic.

Compassion is part of altruism – loving and giving unconditionally. As we strive to become better people we must take steps to become more altruistic, which of course means we can act more compassionate.

There are scientific, medical, and psychological studies that show how compassion actually benefits the given and the receiver. Studies have shown that when I am compassionate to another, I benefit; the receiver benefits, and even those people that observe the act benefit. Compassion may have the ability to induce feelings of kindness and forgiveness, which could give people the ability to stop situations that occasionally lead to violence.

Identifying with another person is an essential process for human beings. It is commonly seen throughout the world as people adapt and change with new styles of clothing, language, behavior, etc., which is illustrated by infants who begin to mirror the facial expressions and body movements of their mother as early as the first days of their lives. This process is highly related to compassion because sympathizing with others is possible with people from other countries, cultures, locations, etc

Compassion is a number of things – helping others in need, relieving stress/strife/pain/hurt. Compassion is a process of connecting by identifying with another person.

 

Today I was reminded again of compassion in an article. The article did cite a quote from author Kari Kampakis. It beautifully describes the concept of using people’s hurtful actions as opportunities for self-growth and compassion. She writes:

“Regardless of how anyone treats you, you stand to benefit. While some people teach you who you do want to be, others teach you who you don’t want to be. And it’s the people who teach you who you don’t want to be that provide some of the most lasting and memorable lessons on social graces, human dignity, and the importance of acting with integrity.”

Sometimes when we experience unkind treatment from others in the world, we can choose to withdraw, feel hurt, feel angry, etc. Or we can use it as a reminder or opportunity, and it can become a means to gain awareness, compassion, and connection.

Frey Freyday – Anger

When I was young, starting my life in the workforce, I thought anger helped propel me in my workday. I look back and wonder how many days I spent being angry and letting that motivate me.

I also had a more sarcastic humor, often based on anger. It did make people laugh but in retrospect, I think it may have distanced some people and it built a perception of me that wasn’t true, or I hope it isn’t.

When we all get depressed, we find power in anger sometimes. It is a continuous loop or circle, we feel sad/depressed and powerless, the anger comes from frustration, etc. and the powerful feeling of anger makes us feel better, feel in control momentarily, but it is fleeting and then we get depressed again.

I remember I had some really cheap luggage with these painful, thin handles years ago. Anger is like heavy baggage with painful handles that we carry around. The bags are meant to be for someone else but we’re the ones stuck carrying them around, weighing us down.

I read once about the Sedona Method. It was a different way to look at things. No judgement. It was an easy way to let go of anger (and other emotional methods). Just ask yourself, “If I wanted, could I let go of this? When? What if I let go of this now?” Imagine holding a pencil and then just letting it go, letting it drop. We can do that with anger. (See the bonus below)

Every day we have plenty of opportunities to get angry, stressed or offended. But what we’re doing when get angry is giving something outside us control over our happiness. We can choose to not let little things upset us.

Giving – giving to others obviously helps the recipients but it also helps us connect to others, it helps us focus on others rather than ourselves, and actually it helps us ‘feel’ better.

We can give of our time, volunteering, write a check, donate food, donate clothing, donate old furniture, donate our skills and expertise. All good things. We can give to our community, our friends, clients, strangers. We can give a kind word, a smile, a precious gift, something sentimental, whatever.

I read an article once “Why Giving Makes Us So Happy” that stated: “Giving is not just a verb. At its essence, it is also a noun. More than something we do, giving is who we are in each moment of our lives, exemplified by the choices we make — sharing a laugh with a neighbor; paying a compliment to the checkout person at the grocery store; passing a warm greeting to someone on the sidewalk; attending carefully to the story our child is telling us rather than chatting on the telephone; relinquishing the need in discussions with our spouse to always be right. Sometimes during this time of year, society might nudge us towards the commercialization of the holidays, the sales, the buying, what gifts that we want and that we’re giving. I feel it is important to remind myself that it is supposed to be about giving and charity and similar things. It is especially during this time of year that people donate to charities – often due to the season, sometimes just because it is year-end.

Some people donate to the same charity each year, that’s fine. There are so many great charities out there, I don’t think that you can go wrong donating to any one, and it is good to keep an open mind.

Frey Freyday was actually born out of something I created called “Words To Live By” (WTLB). Going forward, I will now not only share the quotes, as you may be used to receiving, but also a related (WTLB). In 1999, when we had our first daughter, I was contemplating how I would raise my new beautiful child, and I was thinking about how I can best educate her and my other children about values, morals, and other key thoughts about life. School offers education. Religion offers some values and morals. Parents offer most of it, sometimes intentionally, sometimes accidentally.

So I created a (WTLB) book, like a dictionary, which lists things like honesty, love, persistence, etc. with a definition that I created, with my wife’s input. I then turned it into a workbook with one word per page and space below for notes. For years we would discuss with my two daughters and they would draw pictures and make notes in the blank space. I may share some of those images with you. As they got older, they were less inclined to draw and more open to quotes and references from adults, hence where Frey Freyday came from….

WORD TO LIVE BY:
Vocabulary
-the words you consistently use to describe your emotions and sensations—immediately change how you think, feel and live. (if you want to change your life, Adjust your habitual vocabulary)

It may seem ironic or redundant to site ‘vocabulary’ as a Word to Live By but it is important to cover it.

We all know words allow us to express and share our experiences with others. But not everyone realizes that the words we habitually choose does indeed affect how we communicate with ourselves and therefore what we experience, believe, do, be, etc.

Simply by changing our habitual vocabulary—the words we consistently use to describe emotions—we can instantaneously change how we think, how we feel, and how we live.-Tony Robbins

We can improve or change ourselves by consciously using your words to improve the quality of our life today and for the rest of our lives.

According to Compton’s Encyclopedia, the English language contains some 500,000 words. Yet the average person’s working vocabulary consists of 2,000—0.5% of the entire language. And the number of words we use most frequently—the words that make up our habitual vocabulary? For most people, it averages 200-300 words. Isn’t that unbelievable? (By contrast, John Milton’s writings used about 17,000 words and William Shakespeare used 24,000 words, 5,000 of which he only used one time.)

Of those 500,000 words total, as much as 3,000 are used to describe emotions—2/3 of which are used to describe negative emotions.

With such amazing resources (in our language/vocabulary) with which to express our feelings and ideas, why should people accept such an impoverished vocabulary? Most people are not challenged by the size of the vocabulary they understand, but rather by the words they chose to use. We tend to use the same words over and over again.  Many times we use short cuts, but these short cuts often shortchange us emotionally.

About three years ago, I noticed that I was focusing on, and generally talking to myself (self-talk) in a less than empowering way. I was asking poor questions – “what’s wrong with me?” “Why can’t I do that?” etc. Or I would say “He makes me mad” “that bothers me” , “that’s just a bad situation”.

Similarly, when I got upset, I’d used certain language that invoked certain feelings. So my ‘bad’ language often intensified my feeling. Example: “That was horrific!” Instead, I tried using ‘lighter’ language. Example: “That was interesting/funny/different/amusing/loco” – this new language helped stop me from getting more upset and actually would lighten the mood in some cases. Instead of saying “Holy @#$#@!” I would say something silly like, “Golly”. It broke my pattern.

 Think about our language – even when someone else has a bad situation, our language can sometimes transfer the ‘bad feeling’ to us.

Here’s what I mean….my late mother, my sisters and I still say “I feel bad for”….we feel bad for people and animals, for instance. In other words, when we see an animal struggling, we might say; “I feel bad for that puppy”, or if there is a child struggling or a friend facing a challenge, we’ll say, ” I feel bad for him.”

I am looking at all words, however seemingly small. When we say “I feel bad” we are essentially programming or telling ourselves to ‘feel bad’. Sure, it is nice that we have compassion and care for another person or animal, that’s all good, but when we say “I feel bad for…” we’re not helping that person/animal and we’re encouraging ourselves to ‘feel bad. So I asked my friend Dave about it.

Here are my friend, Dave Blomsterberg’s thoughts, paraphrased….

I suggest taking words like bad, good, negative, positive out of your self talk by simply stating what it is without labeling it. For example: you may feel emotional inside where your energy is low in a situation, ask yourself if that feeling is serving you and if it is, ok…if not, choose to change to another feeling state .

In your example when you say “I feel bad”, you can change it to “I have empathy/compassion for that person/animal”, “I would like to help him/her”, “I would like to help”, “I see the struggle and I want to do something about it”….and if you want to do something for the person/animal then do, maybe sending them love or supporting them in some way, (or say a prayer?).

When you simply feel “bad” for something is that really doing anything for you or them? Yet If you have empathy/compassion and want to do something (even if it’s sending love or compassion from your heart) that offers something for that person/animal to help Empower them to move forward…use your feelings to help in some way instead of simply feeling “bad” which usually ties to guilt and is a mind and time waster.

You may not realize it, but your self-talk may be sabotaging your stress levels!  Self-talk–the way your inner voice makes sense of the world around you and the way you communicate with your inner self–can greatly affect your stress levels in multiple ways. If your self-talk is generally negative, you may be perceiving events if your life as more stressful than they need to be and creating unnecessary anxiety and stress for yourself.

You may be attributing negative motivations to people who are well-meaning, you may be perceiving yourself as less equipped to handle challenges you face, and you may be seeing only more negatives than positives in what you are facing in life, when there may be a much less stressful “bright side” you’re not perceiving because of habitual negative self-talk.  You may also succumb to rumination, a pattern of negative thinking that can consume your idle time and bring stress from the past into the present unnecessarily without leading to any resolution.

Consider what you say to yourself after you’ve done something embarrassing or similar.  Does your inner voice say  “that was sure stupid”? How about if you haven’t even done anything wrong or stupid at all, but your self-talk is just as critical? This type of self-talk causes you to question yourself  and soon become paralyzed with doubt and uncertainty, etc.

Notice Your Patterns:   become more aware of your language. You probably don’t realize how often you say negative things in your head, or how much it affects your experience.
