Integrity: the most important thing is you do what is right when no one is looking.
Integrity is used a lot in business discussions and such, almost overused I think. It can be used in a number of contexts.

 

To me, I use it really only for myself. In other words, to me integrity is really what you do when no one is looking.

Not too many years ago, there were cases when I lost a little integrity in some instances.

One time, as a family, we were all trying to eat healthy foods all week, less sugar, junk, etc. There were times when I was alone at work or traveling and I’d ‘cheat’ on our informal agreement and indulge on cookies, donuts and junk food. No one knew but me.

Other times when I was much younger, I had times when I didn’t put forth full effort at work and didn’t give it my best. Still other times in my youth when I’d state that I read or exercised or did something completely and I didn’t. There were times when I acted nice and friendly on the outside but in my mind I was thinking otherwise.

I believe integrity with oneself is very important. Part of it is discipline, sure – it takes discipline to exercise or avoid that donut, to do work or whatever ‘it’ is. But part of it is just choosing to do the right thing, especially when the easier choice is only ‘half-right’, or just plain wrong.

I find that when I have with integrity with myself- when I stick to my values, when I follow my vision, and when I do things ‘behind the scenes’ even when no one is watching, I build momentum, I feel more confident and satisfied and in some ways I build more credibility with myself. When I don’t do something, I lose it.

Whether its anonymously giving or doing something for charity, doing that extra set of exercise, skipping the snack or the junk, making that call, having a special touch, doing work above and beyond, making an extra effort, living up to our goals and beliefs, truly being kind and compassionate-inside and out, or just doing the right thing, integrity is a must – it is what makes us better.

Whether it be something ‘big’ like a marriage over decades or just what you’re eating today, we have a belief or commitment to something. We are committed to certain goals and values, right? So, in the words of Les Brown “honor your commitments with integrity.” Give your marriage, your diet, your goals, your whatever the honor of doing the right thing all the time. It is hard for me and hard for any of us because we are humans. We seek to be better but we have weak moments.

May the 4th be with you.

Integrity

We should not assume that integrity must always stand for some sort of static moral high ground or hubris. Instead, we should acknowledge the playfulness of this quality, and apply it to the spirit with which we ought to embrace our passions and the determination that can help us achieve our means, whether in a personal, communal or scientific endeavor. WORD TO LIVE BY:

HOPE- Hope is about keeping perspective. We’ve all had good and beautiful days before and we need to remember that they will come again. It is the remembering, the perspective and the focus on the good stuff that sustains our hope.

Remember…..if you’re in a tough spot and struggling, think about those times when things did go well. Remember those you surprised yourself with how well you did something. Remember how kind you were or how kind others were to you. Recall those good times, those times that there was success, those times that good things did happen. Give yourself some credit. Give others some credit, too.

Author Brendon Burchard says, “Look at nature and realize how lucky we are to be here. Go for a stroll outside and look at people as they smile and realize how lucky you are to be here. Walk into a restaurant and see people flirting with each other and having fun at dinner or celebrating, and you start getting a different sense of life. Sometimes you have to get out of your house to feel hope, to keep perspective.”

From time to time we can all become myopic to our own ego, emotional reality, and little worlds. We can miss world all around us.

In my own instance, when I feel down or lose hope, I step back, and really try to look at my life and give thanks. You can’t be both grateful AND hopeless. Also, it helps immensely if I go and do something to help someone else. I see that others may not have it as good as I do, and my actions create good feelings, goodwill and by my own actions, I create hope.

Remember one more thing: Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people, just like you, who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. –

Hello – I am breaking from the normal format and process for a moment. Sometimes we can benefit from reflection and a different perspective. Also, we all love those “Top Ten” lists that everyone seems to offer.

This is a list of the Top Ten Words to Live By, in my opinion. I think in different situations, one can argue a different order here but in general, my list:

 

  1. State of mind – No matter what, your state of mind is everything. Making decisions, taking actions, interacting with others, thinking by ourselves, happiness, life – our state of mind affects all things for better or worse. In the same moment, the state of mind can change everything.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way, to choose one’s own state of mind.-Victor E. Frankl

  1. Decision – the decision to act, to think a certain way, to do or not do….making a decision can literally make an instant and huge impact. A decision can determine your destiny.

“What I’ve come to realize is that the single most important decision in life is this: Are you committed to being happy, no matter what happens to you?” asks Tony Robbins. “To put this another way, will you commit to enjoying life not only when everything goes your way but also when everything goes against you, when injustice happens, when someone screws you over, when you lose something or someone you love, or when nobody seems to understand or appreciation you?”

  1. Action – Talk is cheap. Theroad to hell is paved with good  One action starts change. Consistent action builds habits, persistence and a pipeline of success. 6 Guidelines for Creative Visualization

Here are the six visualizing guidelines that I personally follow when I visualize that allow me to get into the details. They’re not rules. You can come up with your own and develop your own patterns and habits. For me, these are what work and I’ve got some rationale behind each that I’ll share, but I don’t want you to think that these are rules. I’m always making exceptions to them and so can you. This exercise is simply based upon our thoughts becoming things, which is really the only “rule” there is.

1. Visualize once a day. Once a day is all that’s necessary. Of course, you can think happy thoughts on your way to work, or falling asleep at night, and you might even visualize a second or third time every now and then, but overall let this be an exercise that you do one time each day and then let it go. I’ve met too many people who’ve never visualized before in their life, yet suddenly they read or hear about visualizing, get very excited, and then want to do it forty-seven times a day! If you go overboard, thinking that if once is good a hundred times must be better, chances are you’re going to start comparing your champagne and caviar dreamed-of-life with where you now are and become overwhelmed with the disparity and the distance that it seems that you have to travel. You may even become discouraged to the point of quitting visualization altogether. Moreover, you’re constantly and perpetually living in some future world and you’re going to miss out on who you already are and all you already have. Don’t do that to yourself. Do it once a day and let it go.

2. Visualize no longer than five to ten minutes at a time. If you try to visualize longer, no matter who you are, you’re going to start day-dreaming…probably about sex! Or something else equally distracting. And then you’re going to get mad at yourself. You’ll label yourself, thinking you must have adult ADD. You’ll then draw the false conclusion that visualizing doesn’t work for you. It does work for you and it’s easy, just cut it off at no more than five or ten minutes. I visualize every morning before work for just four minutes.

3. Imagine every conceivable detail. Playfully create imaginative, elaborate scenes in your mind’s eye that depict your changed life. Imagine the sights, sounds, colors, textures, and aromas. Make the image in your mind as real and vivid as possible. Of course, I’m not talking about attaching to those details. Just use them to get excited about all the amazing changes that will soon be happening in your life. This how the details are valuable—priceless, even.

4. Feel the emotion. Feel what you’d expect to feel, experiencing the life you dream of experiencing. Feel the joy, the confidence, the satisfaction. No matter how silly it seems in that dark and quiet room when you’re shouting “whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo,” do it! How badly do you want what you want? Chances are you want it bad enough to feel a little silly, to get a little “stupid” in the dark quiet privacy of your own home when you’re visualizing. Emotion is truly the turbo-charger of change; it’s as if our emotions supercharge the thoughts associated with them and that extra charge gives them power over your other competing (or sometimes contradictory) thoughts, drawing circumstances into your path that facilitate your big dream’s manifestation. I tell anybody who wants to bring about major life changes that they should begin with a visualization program; however, I tell anyone who wants to bring about major life changes quickly to visualize with emotion. I’m actually told by many audience members that they aren’t able to imagine details. They tell me their mind doesn’t go there and they even wonder what it is everyone else is seeing. If this is you, perhaps you’re even at an advantage because the most important thing anyone can put in their mental imagery are not the physical details, but the emotional ones. Drop all of the physical details, and just feel the joy, which truly cuts to the chase, bypassing all cursed hows, giving the Universe maximum latitude to work out the details that will bring that smile to your face, the way you put it out there when you visualized.

5. Put yourself in the picture. You’ve got to be there, in the picture, if you want your manifestation to include you. For example, let’s just say one of the details you’re visualizing is a new car. Right before you close your eyes, look at the back of your hands. Your hands are different than anybody else’s: your fingers, finger nails, the hairs, wrinkles, and even the rings you wear are unique. Visualize your hands in your mind’s eye wrapping around the steering wheel of whatever it is that you most want to be driving. This was confirmed beyond doubt by someone who wrote me saying, “Mike, I’m having trouble visualizing. I want that new Volkswagen Beetle, retro-design, sapphire blue!” And of course I replied to her that this is not asking the Universe for too much; you know, there are a lot of those out there, you can have it, visualizing shouldn’t be hard. “Mike, you don’t understand. I was recently involved in a traffic accident…” Unh-oh, I thought. “I was rear-ended…by a sapphire blue, retro-design Volkswagen Beetle.” Ah-ha! “And, Mike, that’s just the half it…this morning…” (I could almost hear her crying between the words) “I watched my neighbor drive to work in her brand new, sapphire blue, retro-design Volkswagen Beetle!” The moral of this story? Put yourself in the picture. And for that matter, while we’re at it, include happy, smiling pictures of yourself on your vision board and scrap book! Feel your toes in the sand at the beach, or feel your hand in the palm of another as you walk together on a moonlit night. Smell the aromas of the scene you’re imagining, perhaps the salt in the air or the smoke from the fireplace. And of course, again, feel the joy. Emotions are powerful for yet another reason, as they automatically put you in the picture.

6. Dwell from the end results—or beyond. This is just one more way to say what I’ve already said many times: do not mess with the cursed hows. When visualizing go to the finished, completed picture—your dream already come true. Do not visualize how it will come true! The cursed hows are the banes of our primitive existence. Yet we’ve all been told since we could crawl that we should mess with the hows, that we’re irresponsible and reckless if we don’t. The truth of the matter, however, is that messing with the hows is what slows us down, tying the hands of the Universe and leading us to think that we must carry the weight of the world upon our shoulders. Incidentally, should you be wondering how it’s possible to take action while not messing with the cursed hows, that is addressed specifically in chapter four. For now, we’re talking about visualizing, and when you do this don’t even think about thinking about anything else. –

Choose How You Want to Feel

Breandan and Emma, the couple up the hill from me in Sausalito have been married 54 years, they proudly told me last year. They walked, hand-in-hand past my home each morning, usually laughing, smiling and pointing out things to each other along the way.

Originally from Ireland, they listened, in bed, to BBC News at dawn so they usually had a tidbit of news to share with me if they happened to pass my home when I was finishing my lame attempt at morning exercises in the back yard.

When Emma died suddenly, Breandan stopped walking. He stayed inside their home and ignored my knock on their door. Several times. Later, when he started walking again, he told me his son, a motivational speaker on leadership, suggested that he start saying positive self-affirmations every morning “to lift his mood.”

He retorted, “My mood doesn’t need lifting! It’s right where it’s supposed to be.” So his well-intentioned son then mailed him a card pack with cheery faces on one side and, on the other, a series of upbeat daily affirmations. The card pack was entitled ”Yes, I Can!” to which Breandan hotly responded (to me, but not his son, I gather) “No I won’t!”

Write Yourself Through Your Journey to a Better Emotional Place

That gift inspired Breandan to get out of the old chair he sat in most days, with a morose look on his face, and take action, but not in the way his son intended. He wrote his own collection of “realistic affirmations.” I figured that the sentiments reflected his way of responding to grief, his stubborn resistance to being told to feel better and his core attitude about living life as it happens. Some were darkly funny. Yet his basic resilience started to shine through as he finished writing his sayings by the end of the year. “Not every cloud has a silver lining so start liking the clouds.”

I thought of Breandan when I read that Norman Vincent Peale may have been wrong, at least for some people, when he advocated saying positive self-affirmations to lift one’s mood. That’s a startling revelation for many of us Americans who have been bombarded with self-help messages based on the belief that positive affirmations are entirely beneficial.

“Repeating positive self-statements may benefit certain people, such as those with high self-esteem, but backfire for the very people who need them the most,” concludes social psychology professor Dr. Joanne Wood. Even those with high self-esteem felt only slightly better after repeating a positive self-statement.

The news gets worse for those with a low self-image Wood and her colleagues found:

• People with high self-esteem are more likely than those with low self-esteem to try to improve their moods when they are sad, as well as to savor their moods when they are happy.

• Those with low self-esteem sometimes even try to dampen their happiness, and engaging with others on Facebook seems to reinforce that reaction.

Don’t Fight Those Feelings. Instead, Notice Them, Then Choose What to Feel

Like obsessing more about the elephant in the room after being told to ignore it, being told to repeat “get happy” sayings, when sad, can make us feel even more sad. As Ed Yong concluded, “Statements that contradict a person’s self-image, no matter how rallying in intention, are likely to boomerang.“ “Don’t believe everything you think. “Thoughts are just that – thoughts,” wrote Pocket Peace author Allan Lokos.

Instead, of trying to change your feelings (as cognitive therapy attempts to do) change how you choose to view your thoughts. That approach calls on us to be mindfully observing what we are thinking and feeling from a calm pool, so to speak, without getting repeatedly sucked into the downward swirl of them. As Thich Nhat Hanh wrote, “Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.”

Practicing this way we can notice what we are feeling in the moment without immediately reacting, thus becoming better at choosing how we want to act. This approach is called ACT:Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. To reinforce that practice, “think of yourself as a kind friend,” suggests Duke University psychology professor Mark Leary. That bolsters yourself-compassion and thus your happiness. “One is a great deal less anxious if one feels perfectly free to be anxious, and the same may be said of guilt,” Alan Watts wrote.

Breandan, by the way, has begun writing his memoir, describing some of the adventures he shared with Emma, the people they met and the joy of living with her “through thick and thin.” His writing enables him to take the ACT approach, to observing and accept his sadness at his wife’s passing and to choose to focus, instead, on the many of the happy times they enjoyed together. He showed me the quote he chose for the first page:

Make THE decision in the right state of mind

Here is a great video that can help anyone with a tough decision, a tough situation, facing a situation or challenge that brings fear.

We all have to go outside a comfort level, we need to handle things without fear.

What do you believe?

We all have beliefs, ideas, judgements, and expectations…

  • Beliefs about others,
  • Beliefs about the world, about luck, about their careers.
  • Beliefs about ourselves
  • Beliefs about fears and limitations.

What beliefs do you have about your fears and phobias? Do they serve you well? Do they empower you? Many of us have fears from our childhood or false/needless fears that hold us back, that limit us, and that just don’t really help us. Maybe it is time to reevaluate those fears?

What beliefs do you have about yourself – your talents, your goals, your successes and your failures? Do they serve you well?

Did you ever notice that our believe appear to be true, that they appear to be reality?
Becareful what you believe.

Once in a while I believe that we all need to step back and look at our own beliefs and evaluate them.

Do they help us? Do they empower us?
You can change your beliefs. You can change the meaning behind events and things around you.

Feeling stressed, tense, worried?

You know, we’ve all been there in one way or another: we’ve been tense and focused on money, maybe stressed, maybe short with our spouse, maybe short with our kids….and in that moment when we’re stressing about money, we’re missing the world around us.

You know what I mean when I say “That awful feeling in the pit of your stomach because you feel like you have to worry about running out of money at the end of the month.”

I’ve been there, then back on “top”, then stressed again, a few times in my life.

I heard a funny thing the other day; someone was saying how they thought ‘rich people’ always think about money and ‘rich people’ are all shallow.

Maybe some are shallow, but in my experience and from what I read, when you had enough money to pay the bills and to live in a decent way, you’re NOT thinking about money much at all. When you have enough to cover the bills, you can think about fun things, about things that you WANT to do in your job and career, and things that you can do for or contribute to others – you can choose to enjoy life a little more.

When I was struggling with income and bills, and when I observe others that have the same struggle to pay bills and meet their obligations, they think about money all day long.

There is a great book that I highly recommend called “Bridges out of Poverty”. It helps explain how people struggling in poverty are constantly thinking about how they are paying the bills, food on the table, tires on the car, utility bills, etc.

Even if we aren’t at the poverty level, we can sometimes have some traits of the poverty mindset……we worry about money, about paying the mortgage, about our jobs, etc. This never creates a good feeling inside, does it?

Again, as someone that has been back and forth, here is some wisdom that I’ve learned from a few others and I believe that it really can help:

  • Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want – instead of focusing on the bills and lack of cash, focus on the things that you really want, the freedom, peace of mind, better health, better relationships, enjoying life, security for your family, etc.

  • Watch your self-talk- we all talk to ourselves and ask ourselves questions throughout the day. There is enough negativity in the world, don’t add to it by bringing yourself down. I was someone who beat myself up for many things and once in a while still do – if you do also, STOP. Reflect on accomplishments, look for references why you’re good at something, ask yourself questions like “Why do I deserve this?” and “Why am I so lucky?” instead of things like “Why can’t I earn more money” or ‘why is this such a struggle’ or ‘why don’t I ever win anything?”

  • Have a vision – ok maybe your life isn’t where you want it to be now and you want to improve – almost everyone does….create a vision. It doesn’t have to be a major complicated thing – something as simple as some bullet points or a paragraph or two is fine – create a simple story of you as you want to be – make the story in present tense as if you already have it – as if you are already “THERE” and you’re looking back on today, when you are struggling. Make sure that in the story you talk about how you’re proud of the steps you took, the hard work, the good attitude, and how you changed for the better. Remember, tell the ideal story of your life as if it is already done!

  • Enjoy the present, live in the moment – when we worry about the future or fret over the past, we miss moments and experiences right in front of us. I recall a time when my wife and I had time alone and I sat there worrrying about something that never even happened. Another time I recall worrying about something and basically ignoring my daughters when I had a free day with them. We all lost and nothing was gained. Take a moment to look around, be aware, and live today’s life. Things can happen in a moment. Look for miracles. You gotta celebrate life’s moments no matter what. There is no rehearsal.

  • Here’s something that can be the toughest for any of us – do the above each and everyday. We can all do things for a while or on occasion, or here and there. We have to ask the right questions, focus on the good stuff, reflect on our vision, and enjoy the present every day! We all must take action – even if they are just baby steps each day. Ask, ‘what thing, regardless how big or small, can I do today?” You don’t have to spend long on it – but at least 5 -10 minutes. Can you turn off the TV, put down the phone, or walk away from the computer or ipad for 10 minutes if it makes you better?

Remember, people with much less smarts, ability, education, opportunity have done great things, contributed, made money, helped others, and been successful , you have the ability, you have the power inside, you just need to take action.

Signs a big dream is about to happen….

When you aren’t where you want to be, when things aren’t exactly as you want them now, we need to act/feel/become like it is happening now.

…..Signs a big dream is about to happen……..What am I saying?

When your dream is about to come true – or when you want something to happen, you can benefit GREATLY by acting AS IF IT IS ALREADY TRUE.

I have done it and it does work, it does help!

Think about what you want, think about how you want it to be, then act as if it is already that way, that you already have “IT”.

Write a letter to your friends to say “hey, it happened, I have IT and I’m so relieved and happy. I really appreciate your support as a friend, your friendship as I worked to make IT happen. I feel like I can do anything, I’m so happy. Again, thanks for being there!” (Send it now or hold it?)

Write your boss a nice letter of gratitude saying you appreciate the years of employment, income, and support but now you are able to earn enough income from another source and you can leave your job. Be nice, be appreciative, without all of our experiences, we wouldn’t be where we are and you wouldn’t now have “IT” in your hands.

Regularly visualize the after-party. Plan a party. OK….so you got “IT”. Now let’s celebrate with your loved ones. What is the party like? What is the room like? Music? Food? Who is there? What is everyone wearing? See them smiling, congratulating you, see you celebrating with everyone and being grateful. How good does it feel? You can now pay them back a little, you can pay for some fun for them now. It feels great to celebrate and treat friends to a good time, doesn’t it?

Sometimes you speak and behave as if it is already true….as if you already have it….as if you already feel that way.

And think….now that you already have “IT”….you also already know what your next goal is…..

Feel those feelings – when you have “IT” how are you feeling ? Relieved….Certain…Confident…Happy….Excited….Free…Independent….

Everyday, do something, take action, make an effort towards “IT”.

Everyday celebrate out loud and secretly about having “IT”. Practice. How happy will you feel?
Will you be jumping? Are you a fist pumper? Do you run and hug the nearest person? How are you celebrating?

Practice celebrating!
