WORD TO LIVE BY:
Strength – the capacity of an object or substance to withstand great force or pressure. Something we all have but sometimes we forget that we have it.
I look back at life and, like almost anyone, there were times when I probably got into a situation because I could have made a better choice, or ‘life happened’ and I found myself in a situation.
I recall one year, a tough year for me, and there were times when I felt like I did not have any personal strength left. Life happened in a number of ways with my career and with losses of loved ones. I also made some poor choices based out of fear and emotion. To be frank, I also was using my situation, my emotions, my hard times, and my seemingly lack of strength as an excuse. I had strength in me all the time.
For a period of time, I was telling myself a story that portrayed me as weak, hurt, a victim, etc. In retrospect, that was a poor story to keep telling myself, it certainly was not useful or empowering.
Later, I began to tell a different story, and I recognized that I have to be accountable, responsible, and that I do have strength, and when I don’t feel it, I need to seek it out. Sometimes that’s found in content, sometimes memories, powerful questions, talking to good friends, getting into a good state of mind, exercise, meditation, laughter, relationships…..
Look back into your own life as I do, you’ve faced large challenges, you’ve accomplished things, you’ve touched other people’s lives. You have overcome situations. You’ve proven yourself to be a person of strength, you just forgot. Humans are incredibly strong beings.
Strength can be built each and every day. Strength can come from our relationships. It is sometimes easy to find strength when I take a moment and reflect on the great family and friends that I have. I feel empowered and I want to do better because of them.
Many of us are walking around stressed, dealing with anxiety, maybe even fearful about things. Be careful of the thoughts you put into your mind. Feed your mind good things, empowering thoughts, ideas that will give you strength- this includes everything from the media to your own thoughts. We are what we read/watch/think.
Many of us think that others have strength and we don’t, or we look to others. We all have it. No matter how ‘ordinary’ or normal you think you are, we all have enough strength to get us through, to make things better.
Frey Freyday was actually born out of something I created called “Words To Live By” (WTLB). Going forward, I will now not only share the quotes, as you may be used to receiving, but also a related (WTLB). In 1999, when we had our first daughter, I was contemplating how I would raise my new beautiful child, and I was thinking about how I can best educate her and my other children about values, morals, and other key thoughts about life. School offers education. Religion offers some values and morals. Parents offer most of it, sometimes intentionally, sometimes accidentally.
So I created a (WTLB) book, like a dictionary, which lists things like honesty, love, persistence, etc. with a definition that I created, with my wife’s input. I then turned it into a workbook with one word per page and space below for notes. For years we would discuss with my two daughters and they would draw pictures and make notes in the blank space. I may share some of those images with you. As they got older, they were less inclined to draw and more open to quotes and references from adults, hence where Frey Freyday came from….
